I have lost count of how many times Winter Soldier has swung a match in Marvel Rivals. His damage output still feels overwhelming to me, especially in close to mid-range skirmishes. In my experience, he starts fights by weaving in basic attacks until his ultimate is ready, then he leaps into the backline and chains executions. The good news is that he has exploitable weaknesses. I have learned to respect his range, deny his ultimate value, and force him into situations where his kit cannot shine.
Winter Soldier is strongest when he can land everything at close to mid-range. I try to deal with him from long range whenever I can. Heroes like Hela have become my best answer because Winter Soldier cannot reach me when I stay outside his effective zone. His basic attack, Roterstern, hits the main target and enemies standing behind them. That means I try not to cluster with my teammates when he is firing. The projectile is not the fastest, and I have found that unpredictable movement is key. If I strafe and change my cadence, he misses headshots far more often.
His Bionic Hook is another ability I watch closely. It can pull an enemy close, usually so Winter Soldier can follow up with Trooper’s Fist. The hook has short range, so my rule is simple: do not stand near him unless I have a clear advantage. If I get pulled, I try to use a movement or defensive ability immediately to break the combo.

How I Counter His Ultimate
The biggest threat in his kit is Kraken Impact. Winter Soldier leaps into the air, crashes onto a target, and puts a red mark on the enemy health bar. If that enemy drops below the mark, they are executed, and his ultimate resets. I used to panic when I saw him jump. Now I know the counterplay is to deny that execution threshold. Bonus health and healing can keep a target alive above the mark, so I try to save certain cooldowns for the moment he starts his leap.
I also keep in mind that he cannot reset Kraken Impact if nobody dies to the execution. A well-timed stun or a burst of bonus health can ruin his entire chain. That knowledge changed how I play against him.
Strategist Counters I Rely On
When I am on Strategist, I have several tools to stop Winter Soldier. Luna Snow is one of my favorites. Her ultimate provides healing and bonus health, which can completely negate Kraken Impact if I time it while Winter Soldier is in the air. The timing matters because he can kill me quickly if I waste it.

Mantis is another strong option. Her stun can interrupt Winter Soldier and waste his ultimate before he gets the reset. I also like her range and damage output, although hitting his head consistently takes practice. Adam Warlock offers a different form of value. He can revive allies who get executed by Winter Soldier, which makes the ultimate feel much less impactful.

Invisible Woman can cut Winter Soldier off from his team. When he is isolated, he has to fight up close where I can focus him with my team. I also use her push ability to create distance. That combination makes him easier prey for long-ranged Duelists.
Vanguard Options That Work
Vanguards are forced to fight close, which is exactly where Winter Soldier wants me. Still, I have found a few options that can slow him down. Doctor Strange and Magneto are excellent because their shields block part of Winter Soldier’s kit. Magneto is especially useful for me because he can absorb damage with Iron Bulwark and Metal Bulwark, then throw it back with his Mag Cannon.

Venom is another decent pick. His Symbiotic Resilience ability grants bonus HP that can keep me alive when Winter Soldier lands lethal damage. I also try to save Venom’s ultimate if I am about to die, because it can prevent Winter Soldier from getting an execution reset on me.
Duelist Counters I Prefer
When I want to fight fire with fire, I pick Hela. She is the most obvious counter in my eyes because she can out-range Winter Soldier so easily. He simply has no answer to her poke from across the objective. Hawkeye also works well for me despite the nerfs. As long as the fight stays around mid-range, I can often two-shot Winter Soldier if I land my shots.

Iron Man is a strong counter because he can fly high in the air, which makes it difficult for Winter Soldier to find any good target. Moon Knight can also shut him down by positioning in places Winter Soldier cannot reach. I like Moon Knight’s damage output, and Winter Soldier rarely has an answer to it. Storm is another option that works well for me. She can play from range, fly, and stay surrounded by her team. That makes it much harder for Winter Soldier to isolate her or land a clean opener.
Overall, I no longer fear Winter Soldier the way I used to. I respect his close-range pressure and his reset potential, but I know that range, bonus health, stuns, and isolation are the keys to beating him. When I stick to those principles, Winter Soldier goes from terrifying to manageable.
