My Vision for Goblin Queen in Marvel Rivals Season 3

As a dedicated player who’s been in the trenches since launch, the launch of Marvel Rivals Season 3 this July was a moment I’d been waiting for. Seeing Jean Grey finally join the fray as the Duelist Phoenix was a dream come true for this X-Men fan. The energy on the servers was electric, with players testing her fiery powers against the backdrop of a newly shaken-up meta. Yet, even as I mastered her telekinetic blasts and Phoenix Force ultimate, my mind kept wandering to another, more sinister figure from the X-Men’s lore: the Goblin Queen, Jean’s own dark clone. While the community buzzes about the upcoming Season 3.5 and the long-awaited arrival of Blade this August, I found myself on Reddit, sharing a detailed concept for how Madelyne Pryor could carve her own unique space in this explosive hero shooter.

It all started with a simple thought: why should she just be a skin? Many in the community seem to expect Goblin Queen to show up as a cosmetic variant for Phoenix, a palette swap with a wicked grin. But to me, that feels like a missed opportunity. NetEase has been clear about their philosophy—they don’t intend to turn full-fledged characters into simple skins. So, I took that as a challenge. What if Goblin Queen wasn’t a echo, but a terrifying reflection? I envisioned her not as a Duelist like Jean, but as a Strategist, a master of psychological warfare and area control who could manipulate the battlefield in ways Phoenix never could.

My concept delved deep into a kit that would make her a true puppet master. Here’s a breakdown of what I imagined:

  • Primary Fire: Soulfire Daggers – Instead of Jean’s precise telekinetic bolts, Goblin Queen would hurl fast, arcing daggers of dark energy. They’d deal slightly less direct damage but would apply a stacking “Torment” debuff.

  • Ability 1: Psychic Lure – She plants a psychic anchor at a location. After a short delay, it erupts, pulling enemies towards it and briefly disorienting them. Perfect for setting up combos or disrupting pushes.

  • Ability 2: Veil of Limbo – Goblin Queen creates a swirling, temporary zone of darkforce energy. Allies inside gain a movement speed boost, while enemies have their vision obscured and their “Torment” debuffs tick damage faster. This would be her core zone-control tool.

  • Ultimate: Goblin Queen’s Decree – Madelyne unleashes her full psychic might, dominating a single enemy hero for a few seconds. The dominated hero turns on their own team, firing at them uncontrollably. The catch? Goblin Queen is vulnerable and stationary during the channel, creating a high-risk, high-reward playmaking ultimate.

This design philosophy sets her completely apart. While Phoenix is about raw, explosive power and personal survivability, Goblin Queen would be about control, deception, and turning the enemy’s strength against them. She wouldn’t have the sheer dueling power of Jean, but she could dictate the flow of the fight, making her a nightmare for organized teams.

Of course, I’m not blind to the realities of game development. As a clone of Jean, the simplest path is indeed a cosmetic one. NetEase hasn’t revealed what future costumes for Phoenix might look like, but they have given us a tantalizing roadmap. The recent teaser for new swimsuit skins arriving soon, followed by those fantastic MCU-collab Fantastic Four outfits, shows they’re investing heavily in cosmetics. Later, we’ll even get Phoenix-themed skins for Magik and Black Panther! So, part of me understands if Goblin Queen ends up as a legendary skin—a stunning, detailed model with unique voice lines and effects. It would be easier to implement and would still let fans play as the character, in a way.

Yet, the current state of the game gives me hope for more. Season 3 has introduced some fascinating new dynamics, though not all have been smooth. Take the new team-up synergy between Phoenix and Wolverine. 🤯 When Jean empowers Logan’s Feral Leap, he becomes a blazing whirlwind of destruction, dealing damage-over-time and gaining lifesteal. It’s incredibly powerful, maybe too powerful, making him a near-unstoppable force against Vanguards. It’s sparked quite a debate in the community! This shows NetEase is willing to create deep, interactive mechanics between characters. If they can design a unique synergy for two existing heroes, surely they have the creative capacity to build an entirely new hero from the ground up?

Looking ahead to Season 3.5 and beyond, the future of Marvel Rivals feels incredibly bright. We have Blade’s debut to look forward to, along with the usual hero rebalancing and fresh content. The game is growing, and the roster is expanding in exciting ways. My dream is that within this growth, there’s room for a character like the Goblin Queen to emerge not from the shadows as a mere costume, but as a fully realized mastermind. She represents a different kind of power fantasy—one of cunning and corruption rather than pure force. Whether she arrives as a skin I can equip on my main or as a new hero I can master from scratch, one thing is certain: the world of Marvel Rivals in 2026 is more vibrant and full of potential than ever, and I can’t wait to see what—or who—comes next.
